Celebrating 6 Years of Teaching: A Journey of Growth and Purpose

Six years ago, I stepped into a classroom for the first time, uncertain of what lay ahead. Coming from a health science background with a degree in dietetics, I had envisioned a career centered around nutrition, wellness, and guiding people toward healthier lives. While my passion for health science remains strong, I have come to realize that my true calling extends beyond the profession itself—it lies in inspiring, imparting knowledge, and uplifting others toward their better selves. Teaching, as it turns out, has given me the most fulfilling opportunity to do just that.

My first posting was on 11 February 2019 at SMK Datuk Panglima Abdullah, Semporna. Teaching was not part of my original plan, but in these six years, it has become my greatest source of purpose and joy. The impact of a teacher goes beyond textbooks and lesson plans; it is in the moments of connection, in the sparks of understanding, and in the encouragement that helps students believe in themselves. Seeing my students grow, not just academically but as individuals, has made every challenge worthwhile.

Much of my inspiration comes from my mother, who was not only a teacher but a role model loved by all who knew her. She dedicated her life to shaping young minds with patience, kindness, and unwavering support. She showed me that teaching is more than a profession—it is a lifelong commitment to nurturing potential and making a difference in people’s lives. Even now, I strive to embody the same warmth and dedication that she carried throughout her career.

Reflecting on these past six years, I see a journey of immense growth—not just in my students, but in myself. Teaching has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the profound power of human connection. It has shown me that education is not just about delivering content; it is about empowering others to discover their own strengths and aspirations.

As I celebrate this milestone, I carry deep gratitude for the path that has led me here. Teaching has allowed me to touch lives in ways I never imagined, and in doing so, it has shaped me into the person I am today. To my students, colleagues, and mentors—thank you for being part of this journey. And to my mother, whose legacy of love and learning continues to inspire me every day—this journey is for you.

I also want to give credit to Teach for Malaysia, who played a big part in shaping my solid foundational skills, apart from the lecturers I have worked with from IPG Gaya, Tawau, and Keningau. Their guidance and support have been invaluable in my journey as an educator. Additionally, I am grateful to Westlake International School, who has entrusted me to nurture more leaders in the pursuit of excellence.
